Candy Cane decor continued - a light fixture?
We converted an old tobacco drying basket into a light fixture by suspending it upside down over a chandelier. We have beautiful edison bulbs in it that give off a very mellow glow. I was chewing on a large candy cane while making the candy cane wreath and then a light went off..haha I started draping the large candy canes over the wire basket. I love the look- added just the right amount of Red colored fun to the dining room.
And bonus, if hungry you can just grab one and eat it. :)
tobacco drying basket into a light?
A beauty isn't she? Lets backtrack a bit. We are in base housing in Texas. The lighting is some form of cheapest thing they could buy in bulk that holds one 40 watt bulb and gives off enough light to make you go blind. We have changed out most of the lighting so we all don't need glasses. For the dining room I had a tobacco drying basket that I bought at The Depot at Gibson Mills in Concord, NC. Now if you have not been there you have no idea how much wonderful-ness you are missing out on. It is one of my favorite places to shop.
Anyway, I bought this basket - it came with a tip and also a stand. I was told it was used to dry tobacco. When I saw it I knew I wanted it for a light fixture but I didn't buy it. When I went back a few weeks later it was still there and still calling to me- so of course I had to get it.
Now we moved to Texas and we moved it with us. I began a search for a fixture to put inside. I was looking at a very girlie one with lots of crystals but chose to go much simpler and cheaper.
I bought this ugly brass - been in every builders home imaginable. But it was getting ready for a transformation.
Oh yes..nothing a can of oil rubbed bronze spray paint can't take care of. The globes were thrown away because they were hideous.
The next step was hiding the chain and wires - did not want those to show. So, burlap to the rescue. I just took a roll of burlap ribbon and sewed up one side to make a sleeve.
The last step was adding some beautiful Edison bulbs. I love how it turned out.
a little bit of fall-i-fying
As most if not all of our decorations have gone back to NC in storage, I will have to just remember back to last year and enjoy fall that way. It is my most favorite season back home. Here in this part of Texas it is not a season but merely a verb.
our NC dining room reveal
Again sparse as realtors like it that way for showings and photos. It is a huge room - I guess the people who built this house in 1929 had a large family.
Are the windows not to die for? I used to put the buffet where the blue desk is - until I added the chalkboard to it. Then it was just too tall. The blue desk is not normally in here- just for the showings.
This room has a fireplace - doesn't every dining room? haha You will notice the butlers pantry off to the left. This room is huge I say. We are contemplating when we get back in 3 years of moving the kitchen to here or turning it into a family room.
Thought I'd just share the spring-y table centerpiece. I love nests and birds.
Hope you enjoyed the tour..

{ Christmas dining room }
Our dining room is the largest room in the house. I guess they did it big in 1929 when it came to entertaining. You will recall that I took the room over to become my craft studio. Well with our impending move we need to take it back to dining room status for pictures to rent.
I couldn't let it go without decorating it now could I?
Here it is in progress- please ignore clutter you see around - I'm trying to clear all the remaining craft stuff.
Again simple is the name of the game. Plain and pretty.
Ignore that not so pretty cricut machine in there..it's going to be sold :)
I still need to get the shades for the chandelier covered in some linen.
Again another close up of the mantle.
And this is the actual black hole decor of the fireplace:
So, do you go hog wild in decorating the dining room or more simple?

Arrghh paint not matching
Okay I was already to paint the second coat in the dining room. Now remember this room has driven me crazy as to what color to paint it..go bold, go neutral, very frustrating to say the least. So, I got a color to do my bedroom and LOVED it. So, I figured I'd love it in the dining room and I do - well I love what the leftovers covered. So, I went to get two more gallons - enough to do a second coat and then more to do the back hall-mudroom too. Imagine my disgust when I get it out and put the first roller swath on the wall and it is NOT the same at all. Seems my normal paint mixer guy at the Home Depot was not there and I should have worried watching the girl being frustrated that mixed it..but really how do you know it is not the same until you put it on the wall?
So, until I get to HD tonight and finish painting I'll have to hold off on posting pics of the room.

Dining room dilema
Well the dilemma right now is what color to repaint the dining room. Our house has a strange layout for today's living. But I am sure it worked well for when it was made - 1929.
You enter straight into one of the two largest rooms - it has a fireplace and built ins.
I assume it was the more formal sitting room. We used it as that since we moved in and it never got used. It was merely a hallway to get to the kitchen and the staircase. The other largest room and I mean huge was the dining room. It got used maybe 4 times a month and for major holidays. So, I sat down one day and said it is weird that we don't use the two largest rooms - they just sit there untouched. I made a decision to change things up. I moved the dining room to the front formal sitting room. Now it is the room you see when you enter. It is always decorated for whatever season or holiday and it still gets used maybe 4 times a month.
The old dining room right now is the family craft room but later will be switched to be the family room.
But back to the dining room. It is painted in a golden color as is the staircase that is near it and the back hallway to the kitchen. These were painted before when the previous owners lived here and it shows- they need to be redone- pretty dirty. But what color?
Do I go with the same golden color or a similar one as it ties into the rest of the house well and matches my fabric for downstairs? Stay with it as it coordinates with the two rooms off of it that are a red color? Or do I go a different route?
It is a hard question as the trim is all white, the brick on the fireplace is a grayish-taupe and the dining room chairs are a distressed cream. Hmmm what do I do.?
Here is a pic of the room so you can see the dilemma?
So, what do you think? What would you do? You can barely see the room off in the front - it has white wainscoting and red walls. Maybe just stay golden and paint the table red? I am at a loss on this decision. Why should picking a paint color be so challenging?
