1..2..3.. ladderbacks for you and me

Aren't these gorgeous?
This is the final product but lets backtrack to see where they started out.

I bought these two ladder back chairs at a yard sale last summer. Yes I know, it sure took me long enough to do them didn't it? But I wasn't quite sure what I wanted to do until now. I did know the cane seat had to go away..very grimy.

Got the handy dandy sander out and went to town on them. Had to remove that nasty sealer coat.

Next they got a nice coat or two of white paint. You can not go wrong with white paint at all. It is so fresh and just yells - NEW !

Then went at them with a block sander and roughed them up a bit. Can't be too fancy and new. They have to have some look of use to them. I did not glaze them as the old wood looked great poking through the white paint as is.

Then I decided to use numbers on the back of the slats. Numbers are so popular and well honestly they look adorable. I didn't want to just write 1..2..3.. and so on. So, I mixed it up a bit with spelling numerals and spelling the number out - they alternate on each chair.

I then put on some brown and white ticking fabric to make the seats. It looks so fresh and classic. I am going to have them in my booth May 1st but if they don't sell I won't be too upset as they look awesome with my dining room table and chairs.

It was a fun project - the lettering took some time on my part as I am not the best painter with a tiny brush. Amazing I can cut in on a wall no problem but to do lettering - youwza that is some tough painting. I wasn't too worried with the numbers as I knew that once painted they'd get a light sanding to distress them a bit so that would hide all the imperfections.

They sure do look good and are fun in addition.

So, that is one of the many projects that I did this weekend. I have tons more to share as we go throughout this week. What did you accomplish?

I'm attending the following parties so stop by and see tons of great projects:

  18. So nice. I love the number combination.

  19. I like the new look of the ladder back chairs. I have fun transforming
    furniture too.

  20. What a fun project! You must have been very patient to paint out all those words and numbers. I probably would have just done numbers to save on time!!! But I think it's worth it to have that added quirkyness and interest to the backs of the chairs.

  21. Numbered painting is so hot right now! Cute, cute!

  22. These look great..love the numbers and words on the backs.
I have a question...I just bought a table and 4 chairs exactly like this on Craig's list...the seats are in great shape so don't want to change them out but when you took them off do they fall apart? Do I have to tape and cover them when I paint...would be so much easier if I could remove them safely wile aI painted and then replace them .
    Thanks for any tips!

  23. The color used on the numbers is wonderful! Creative transformation of the chairs from the material choice, paint color, distressing and numbers!!

  24. Absolutely LOVE the numeral letters and written out -- so fun!

  25. What adorable chairs. I love that you used numbers and spelled some out too. Cute!
