Dining room dilema

Well the dilemma right now is what color to repaint the dining room. Our house has a strange layout for today's living. But I am sure it worked well for when it was made - 1929.
You enter straight into one of the two largest rooms - it has a fireplace and built ins.
I assume it was the more formal sitting room. We used it as that since we moved in and it never got used. It was merely a hallway to get to the kitchen and the staircase. The other largest room and I mean huge was the dining room. It got used maybe 4 times a month and for major holidays. So, I sat down one day and said it is weird that we don't use the two largest rooms - they just sit there untouched. I made a decision to change things up. I moved the dining room to the front formal sitting room. Now it is the room you see when you enter. It is always decorated for whatever season or holiday and it still gets used maybe 4 times a month.
The old dining room right now is the family craft room but later will be switched to be the family room.

But back to the dining room. It is painted in a golden color as is the staircase that is near it and the back hallway to the kitchen. These were painted before when the previous owners lived here and it shows- they need to be redone- pretty dirty. But what color?

Do I go with the same golden color or a similar one as it ties into the rest of the house well and matches my fabric for downstairs? Stay with it as it coordinates with the two rooms off of it that are a red color? Or do I go a different route?
It is a hard question as the trim is all white, the brick on the fireplace is a grayish-taupe and the dining room chairs are a distressed cream. Hmmm what do I do.?

Here is a pic of the room so you can see the dilemma?

So, what do you think? What would you do? You can barely see the room off in the front - it has white wainscoting and red walls. Maybe just stay golden and paint the table red? I am at a loss on this decision. Why should picking a paint color be so challenging?

  1. Just came from the cottage & bungalow board hoping to see some interior shots of your home! With your porches as welcoming as they are I knew the inside would/will be a treat! Looking forward to more pics!

  2. Thanks Dona,

I am in the process of as we said on the boards - cleaning the house- so I can take lots of pics for the virtual tour. I have so much painting that needs to be done. It might be done before the pictures or there may be a new set after the painting :)
Thanks on the porches. We had so much rain today that it was nice to just sit out front and watch it from the porch. Stop back by anytime - and any input on the dining room color?
